Examples of Group Roles in the Classroom
The video below shows English language learners in China using group roles. The first 3 minutes are particularly useful for teachers wanting to know how to explain group roles to older, more mature students.
This next video shows younger students using their time effectively to divide work fairly between each member of the team. There is often a strong leader in each group that is very obvious!
Rubrics
Students need to know what they can improve on in order to grow into better team players. For that reason, a rubric can be used to assess students ability to use group roles in an effective manner. It is also important that students can reflect on their own personal strengths and weaknesses in order to improve. For that reason, sample rubrics have been attached as examples!
Sometimes, it might be appropriate to ask each individual group member to give an assessment of one another. This can give teachers a better understanding of how individuals functioned when they were not directly supervised. These evaluations can either be made public to the student, or kept private so that students don't feel pressure to help their friends get better grades. An example of a private peer assessment is below.
